Our houses are stashed with miscellaneous things that could be really dangerous for our pets. Today, we see numerous cases of dog poisoning every year and most of them occur in our own house and the culprits are mostly random things like food items, plants kept in the house, chemicals that we use in our yards and even human drugs. Though we cannot remove most of these items, we can certainly make them inaccessible to our pets. So let’s have a quick rundown on the list of items you must keep away from your explorer pet. 1.Foods Chocolates: The sweetness of chocolate which we love to indulge in is not as pleasurable to our dogs as it is to us. A compound called the bromine in your favorite dark chocolate is to be blamed for it which makes it highly unsuitable for our furry buddies. It causes seizures and vomiting in dogs and thus must be strictly hidden away from your pet. Gums: Candies and gums contain xylitol which brings a drastic drop in blood sugar levels of dogs, exposing it to a life-threatening condition. Xylitol can be extensively damaging to the liver as well because it hampers most of the liver functions leading to functional failure. Grapes and Raisins: If you don’t mind seeing your dog eat grapes or raisins, you definitely need to know that this fruit can cause severe kidney failure in pets. Macadamia Nuts: Nuts are not good for your pet and especially, macadamia nuts. Its consumption causes diarrhea, vomiting and overheating in dogs and thus they mustn’t have access to these nuts at all. Alcohol: Alcohol poisoning in Fidos can lead to respiratory problems in dogs. When consumed in high quantity, a dog may even get into coma apart from suffering through other convulsions like vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, hallucinations. 2.Plant Tulips: The bulb of this beautiful flower is very poisonous to dogs. If the dog eats it mistakenly, he may face breathing issues, increased heart rate, and gastrointestinal troubles. Sago Palms: The seeds of this plant can damage the liver of dogs and he may also have to suffer from seizures and vomiting. Rhododendrons: Another plant that causes digestive upsets, vomiting and even coma in dogs. 3.Cleaners Household cleaners like detergents, drain cleaners, toilet cleaners, rust removers, sprays and lime removers pose a high risk of poisoning in pets due to their high acidic or alkaline nature. Other than these, the normal cleaners like spot removers or glass cleaning solution must also be kept away. Even they can be hazardous to canines when ingested in large quantities. 4.Gardening Products Fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides that we use to maintain our pretty lawns and yards are highly dangerous to dogs. These chemicals can form mass balls (concretion) in the pet’s stomach causing gastrointestinal blockage. Ingestion of large quantities of these gardening products may be associated with pancreatitis. So, better keep them stored away from your pet’s reach. 5.Rodenticides We know those rats are nasty and can make our life hell so we cannot avoid using rat killers. However, as a matter of fact, if you want to safeguard your canine from any uninvited poisoning, these chemicals must be carefully used when the pet is not around. They must be kept out of their reach anyhow. 6.Human Drugs Human medicines like painkillers and other common drugs that contain naproxen and ibuprofen are life-threatening to pets. They can lead to brain swelling, kidney failure, internal bleeding, vomiting, and bloat. Even the smallest amount can result in severe consequences. If at all your dog ingests it by mistake, he must be taken to the vet immediately. What to Do If the Pet Has Ingested the Poison? Just by any chance if your pet ingests these poisons, you must try to give him hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. In the meanwhile, call the vet and book an emergency appointment immediately. Any delay in the process could threaten your pet’s life so, be very swift. Better prevent the situation by maintaining a separate place to hide all the chemicals and keep them locked. About chocolates and food items, you can again store it in the uppermost rack where your pet cannot reach them. And, to keep your house pet-friendly, bring plants that are safe for them. Taking all such measures would help your Fido to stay safe and healthy all the time. Moreover, provide all the necessary immune building nutrients and health supplements that can help him in combating diseases and build up body strength, which is much needed in such uncalled-for events.
